What is a Texas King bed?

The Texas King is the length specialist of the oversized sizes. It keeps a width close to a standard King (80 in against 76 in) but stretches the length to 98 in. The four specialist makers we checked all list it at 80 × 98 in.

Watch out: the sideways Texas King

Some makers also sell the same footprint turned 90°: 98 in wide and 80 in long. One maker lists both "Texas King (80 × 98)" and "Texas King (98 × 80)"; another sells the 98 × 80 in version as a "Perfect King". That is a completely different bed in a room: a wide, King-length bed instead of a long one. Check which one a listing means before you order the frame and sheets.

Texas King vs. California King, Wyoming King and Alaskan King

  • vs. California King (72 × 84 in): 8 in wider and 14 in longer (the California King in detail: California King bed size).
  • vs. Wyoming King (84 × 84 in): 4 in narrower but 14 in longer, and slightly bigger overall (54.4 vs. 49 sq ft).
  • vs. Alaskan King (108 × 108 in): the Alaskan King is 28 in wider and 10 in longer.

The full three-way comparison is in Texas King vs. Wyoming King vs. Alaskan King. Every oversized size is on the chart of the biggest bed sizes.

Who is a Texas King for?

Couples where one or both partners are tall enough to hang off the end of a King or California King. For two sleepers it gives 40 in of width each (our calculation), a little more than a King. It is not the bed for adding children or dogs: for that, you need width, which means a Wyoming King or bigger.

Will a Texas King fit in your bedroom?

By our calculation, with 30 in of walking space on both sides and at the foot, a Texas King needs a room of at least 11.7 × 10.7 ft (3.6 × 3.3 m). The headboard wall barely changes compared with a King; it is the depth of the room that matters, because the bed sticks out 18 in further.
