Comforter size chart
Sizes as sold by US bedding makers on their own sites. Makers don't agree on which number comes first, so each range below gives the long side, which goes across the bed, then the short side. Twin comforters (for the 38 × 75 in Twin) are the exception: they are longer than they are wide.
| Comforter size | Mattress | Comforter (in) | Comforter (cm) | Hangs over each side* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twin / Twin XL | 38 × 75 in / 38 × 80 in | 64–70 wide, 86–92 long | 163–178 wide, 218–234 long | 13–16 in |
| Full | 54 × 75 in | 86–92 by 82–88 | 218–234 by 208–224 | 16–19 in |
| Queen (often sold as Full/Queen) | 60 × 80 in | 88–98 by 88–96 | 224–249 by 224–244 | 14–19 in |
| King (often sold as King/California King) | 76 × 80 in | 102–114 by 90–98 | 259–290 by 229–249 | 13–19 in |
| California King | 72 × 84 in | 102–104 by 96 | 259–264 by 244 | 15–16 in |
| Oversized King | 76 × 80 in | 114–116 by 98–112 | 290–295 by 249–284 | 19–20 in |
*Our calculation for the long side across the bed. Ranges: nine bedding makers for the King, eight for the Queen, three for the Full, two for the California King and two for the Oversized King.

How much should a comforter hang over?
The overhang has to cover the side of the mattress first. On a 12 in mattress, a King comforter that hangs 13 in over each side ends just below the mattress; one that hangs 19 in covers part of the box spring or frame too. So measure your mattress height, add a topper if you use one, and compare it with the overhang in the chart. If your bed is thick or high, the long end of the King range, or an Oversized King, gives the most coverage.
King or California King comforter?
Most makers we checked sell one comforter for both beds, labeled "King/California King". It works because a California King is 4 in narrower and 4 in longer than a King (California King bed size): a comforter 102 to 114 in across covers either. The two makers that sell a separate California King comforter list it at 102 to 104 in by 96 in.
What is an Oversized King comforter?
A King comforter cut bigger than usual, for more overhang. The Oversized King comforters we found measure 114 to 116 in on the long side, and 98 to 112 in on the short side, for about 19 to 20 in of overhang on each side of a King (our calculation). One maker also lists a "Super King" of 120 by 120 in.
Comforters for beds bigger than a King
A King comforter is too small for the oversized sizes. On a Wyoming King (84 × 84 in), a 102 to 114 in King comforter hangs only 9 to 15 in over each side, and an Oversized King 15 to 16 in (our calculation). On an Alaskan King (108 × 108 in), a King comforter barely covers the top, with 3 in to spare at most, and a 120 in "Super King" hangs 6 in: it needs a comforter made for the size.
Duvet covers and quilts
A duvet cover has to match its insert, so it follows the same sizes: the two King duvet covers we found are 107 to 110 in by 94 to 96 in. Quilts follow their own sizes (one maker's King quilt is 112 by 100 in), so check the finished size before you buy. Not sure which to buy? Duvet vs comforter.
