California King bed size in inches, feet and cm

The California King mattress measures 72 in wide and 84 in long, which is 183 × 213 cm and exactly 6 × 7 ft. Measure the mattress you own before you buy a frame or a fitted sheet for it.

California King vs. King

The two are the biggest standard sizes, and they are easy to confuse. A King is 76 × 80 in (193 × 203 cm): 4 in wider and 4 in shorter than a California King, with slightly more surface (42.2 sq ft against 42 sq ft). Choose the California King for length, the King for width. How it compares with the biggest square bed: Alaskan King vs California King.

Who is a California King for?

Tall sleepers whose feet reach the end of an 80 in mattress, and people who sleep alone or as a couple and want length rather than width. Couples who want a mattress each, on adjustable bases, can look at a Split King instead. For two adults, it gives 36 in of width each (our calculation), 2 in less than a King.

What size room does a California King need?

By our calculation, with 30 in of walking space on both sides and at the foot, a California King needs a room of at least 11 × 9.5 ft (3.4 × 2.9 m). It fits a slightly narrower wall than a King, but needs a slightly deeper room.

California King sheets and bedding

A California King fitted sheet is made for 72 × 84 in: a King fitted sheet is 4 in too short for it, a Queen one 12 in too narrow. Check the pocket depth against the height of your mattress plus any topper. Some comforters are sold as a single King/California King size because they hang over the edges: check the finished dimensions on the listing. Of the nine US bedding makers we checked, five sell their King comforter as King/California King (106 to 114 in across, so 17 to 21 in over each side of a 72 in California King, our calculation), and the two that sell a separate California King comforter list it at 102 to 104 in by 96 in. Typical sizes: comforter size chart.

The next size up

The biggest step up, measured: Alaskan King vs. California King. For the long sizes, see Texas King vs. Wyoming King vs. Alaskan King.

If a California King is long enough but too narrow, the Wyoming King keeps the same 84 in of length and adds 12 in of width (84 × 84 in). If you need more length still, the Texas King is 80 × 98 in. Every size bigger than a King: biggest bed sizes compared.
