Family Bed

A Family Bed is an extra-wide mattress for co-sleeping families: 120 × 80 in (305 × 203 cm) (10 ft wide) for the standard size and 144 × 84 in (366 × 213 cm) (12 ft wide) for the Family Bed XL. That is up to 99% more surface than a King.

What is a family bed?

"Family bed" means two things: a way of sleeping (parents and children sharing one bed) and a mattress size built for it. As a size, the Family Bed trades length for width. It keeps roughly the length of a King (80 or 84 in) and stretches the width to 10 or 12 ft, so a whole family can sleep side by side.

It is also the oversized size whose dimensions vary most between sellers. The makers and retailers we checked list the Family Bed at 120 × 80 in and the XL at 144 × 84 in, but one oversized-bed guide we read gives the Family Bed as 108 × 84 in. Always check the inches.

  • Family Bed vs. Alaskan King: the Family Bed is 12 in wider but 28 in shorter, and smaller overall (66.7 sq ft against 81).
  • Family Bed XL vs. Alaskan King: the XL is 36 in wider and 24 in shorter, and slightly bigger overall (84 sq ft).
  • Family Bed vs. two Queens: two Queens side by side also make 120 × 80 in, as two separate mattresses with two sets of sheets. A Family Bed is made for that size and takes one fitted sheet of 120 × 80 in.

How many people fit on a family bed?

Sleepers Family Bed (120 in) Family Bed XL (144 in) Alaskan King (108 in)
3 40 in each 48 in each 36 in each
4 30 in each 36 in each 27 in each
5 24 in each 28.8 in each 21.6 in each

Our calculation: mattress width divided by the number of sleepers. For reference, each of two people on a standard King has 38 in.

Co-sleeping with a baby: what pediatricians recommend

The American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend bed-sharing with infants under any circumstances. It recommends room-sharing instead: the baby sleeps in the parents' room, close to their bed, but on a separate surface designed for infants (crib, bassinet or play yard), ideally for at least the first six months. Source: AAP, HealthyChildren.org.

A family bed is for older children who can safely share an adult bed. If you have a baby, one setup that follows this advice is a family bed for the parents and older children, with a bassinet right next to it.

Will a family bed fit in your bedroom?

Width is the constraint. By our calculation, with 30 in of walking space on both sides and at the foot, a Family Bed needs a room of at least 15 × 9.2 ft and a Family Bed XL 17 × 9.5 ft. The first number is the headboard wall. If you have a long wall but not much depth, a Family Bed often fits where an Alaskan King doesn't.

Family Bed or Alaskan King?

  • Family Bed if you want the most width for the least floor depth, and nobody needs more than the 80 in length of a standard King.
  • Family Bed XL for four sleepers who want 36 in each, or five at about 29 in each.
  • Alaskan King if you want a square bed with the full 9 ft in both directions, or tall adults will share it.

Is anything bigger than an Alaskan King? The answer, with the Family Bed XL in the numbers: Texas King vs. Wyoming King vs. Alaskan King. And the biggest bed ever built holds a Guinness record at 86 ft 11 in long.
