How big is an Alaskan King compared with other beds?
| Size | Inches (W × L) | Centimeters | Feet | Surface | vs. King |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Queen | 60 × 80 in | 152 × 203 cm | 5 ft × 6 ft 8 in | 33.3 sq ft (3.1 m²) | -21% |
| King (Eastern King) | 76 × 80 in | 193 × 203 cm | 6 ft 4 in × 6 ft 8 in | 42.2 sq ft (3.92 m²) | — |
| California King | 72 × 84 in | 183 × 213 cm | 6 ft × 7 ft | 42 sq ft (3.9 m²) | -1% |
| Wyoming King | 84 × 84 in | 213 × 213 cm | 7 ft × 7 ft | 49 sq ft (4.55 m²) | +16% |
| Alberta King | 96 × 96 in | 244 × 244 cm | 8 ft × 8 ft | 64 sq ft (5.95 m²) | +52% |
| Alaskan King | 108 × 108 in | 274 × 274 cm | 9 ft × 9 ft | 81 sq ft (7.53 m²) | +92% |
Put simply, an Alaskan King covers a little less floor than two standard Kings side by side (81 sq ft against 2 × 42.2), but as one square instead of a long rectangle. Two Queens pushed together are a different shape again: 120 × 80 in, the size sold as a Family Bed. That is 12 in wider than an Alaskan King but 28 in shorter, with a seam down the middle. Every other oversized size is on the chart of the biggest bed sizes, and the same sizes are drawn to scale on our printable bed size chart.
How many people fit on an Alaskan King?
Width is what decides it, because every sleeper gets the full 108 in of length. Here is the width each person gets when the bed is shared evenly (our arithmetic):
| Sleepers | Width each | For comparison |
|---|---|---|
| 2 adults | 54 in (137 cm) | the width of a whole Full bed, per person |
| 3 people | 36 in (91 cm) | 2 in less than a Twin (38 in) |
| 4 people | 27 in (69 cm) | about 70% of a Twin's width |
On a standard King, two adults get 38 in each: exactly a Twin apiece. The Alaskan King gives the same two people 16 in more each, plus 28 in more length. With a child or a large dog in the middle, three sleepers still get close to a Twin's width. Four is where it gets tight for adults. If two adults and two children share the bed every night, the Family Bed XL (144 in wide) gives each of four sleepers 36 in, though it is 24 in shorter.
Not every "Alaskan King" is 108 × 108 in
Makers use the name their own way, so check the inches. On the makers' own product pages we found these variants sold under the Alaskan King name:
| Name used | Size | Makers listing it |
|---|---|---|
| Alaskan King (Original) | 108 × 108 in | all four makers we checked |
| Smaller Alaskan King | 96 × 96 in | one maker (same size as the Alberta / Vermont King) |
| Shorter Alaskan King | 108 × 96 in | one maker |
| Shorter Alaskan King | 108 × 84 in | three makers |
| Shorter Alaskan King | 108 × 80 in | two makers (also sold as Florida King) |
| Wider Alaskan King | 120, 144 or 156 × 108 in | one maker |
If you buy the mattress from one maker and the frame or sheets from another, match the inches, not the name. How it compares with the standard sizes: Alaskan King vs. King and Alaskan King vs. California King. Next to the other oversized squares: Texas vs. Wyoming vs. Alaskan King.
Alaskan King frame size
A frame can take more floor space than the mattress it holds. One example with published measurements: one maker lists its wooden frame for a 108 × 108 in mattress at 111 × 111 in overall, with a 49⅜ in headboard and a stated weight capacity of 1,000 lbs. Plan the room around the frame's overall size, not the mattress.
Ours, shipping included: Alaskan King mattresses from $4,389. More frames are in the Alaskan King bed frame collection.
Alaskan King sheet and comforter sizes
- Fitted sheet: 108 × 108 in, with a pocket deeper than your mattress is thick. King sheets (76 × 80 in) won't stretch to fit. Add the height of any topper, then take the next pocket up: a 12 in mattress with a 3 in topper needs an 18 in pocket.
- Comforter or duvet: A bedding maker's rule of thumb is to add 12 in to the length and 16 in to the width, which gives about 124 × 120 in for an Alaskan King (our arithmetic).
- Where to buy: bedding cut for 108 × 108 in is sold mainly by the oversized-bed specialists. Prices across makers are on our Alaskan King bed price page.
How an Alaskan King mattress gets to your bedroom
Measure this before anything else. A mattress this size can't come in a regular box, and makers handle it differently. One maker ships its Alaskan King mattresses folded in half, in one piece, with free curbside delivery; it offers in-home delivery only on its top model. Another ships its Wyoming King mattresses rolled in a smaller box.
Folded in half, a 108 × 108 in mattress is still 108 in long and 54 in across, so it has to get through your front door, along the hallway and around any turn in the stairs. Measure the narrowest point on that path before you order, and ask the seller how the mattress will arrive: folded, rolled or flat.
Room size for an Alaskan King
How much room you need depends on how much walking space you want around the bed. Our calculation, for a 108 × 108 in mattress with space on both sides and at the foot:
| Walking space | Minimum room |
|---|---|
| 24 in (61 cm), tight | 13 × 11 ft (4.0 × 3.4 m) |
| 30 in (76 cm), comfortable | 14 × 11.5 ft (4.3 × 3.5 m) |
| 36 in (91 cm), generous | 15 × 12 ft (4.6 × 3.7 m) |
Add the depth of nightstands and dressers, and the swing of any door that opens into the room. Our advice: if your room is under 13 ft on the side where the bed goes, look at the Wyoming King (84 × 84 in) instead. The simplest check of all: tape a 9 × 9 ft square on the floor before you order. More room sizes for every bed are in bedroom size for each bed.
Is there a bigger bed than the Alaskan King?
Among the named sizes, only the Family Bed XL (144 × 84 in (366 × 213 cm)) covers more floor, and only slightly: 84 sq ft. It is wider but 24 in shorter. For more width than that, one maker lists wider versions up to 156 × 108 in. Compare them all on the chart of the biggest bed sizes, or look at the smaller square option, the Wyoming King bed. The largest bed ever made is a different story: a Guinness record bed 86 ft 11 in long.
