Bed size chart: every size bigger than a King

The standard sizes (Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King) are included for reference, so you can see the gap for yourself. Sizes are width × length, as listed by the makers and retailers who sell them (sources at the bottom of this page). One nuance: the makers we checked list the Full at 54 in or at 53 in wide; the table uses 54 in. Twin and Twin XL in detail: twin bed dimensions. The Queen in detail: queen bed dimensions.

What counts as "bigger than a King"?

A standard King (also called Eastern King) is 76 × 80 in (193 × 203 cm), or 42.2 sq ft. The California King is not bigger: it is 4 in narrower and 4 in longer, for 42 sq ft (see Alaskan King vs. California King). Every size below is larger than both, and is mostly sold by specialist makers. That is why they are often called oversized, super king or "custom" sizes.

Every oversized bed size, one by one

Texas King: 80 × 98 in (203 × 249 cm)

The Texas King is the longest bed short of the Alaskan King: 98 in (8 ft 2 in), which is 14 in more than a California King. It suits very tall sleepers who don't need a lot of extra width. How it compares: Texas King vs. Wyoming King vs. Alaskan King. More on the Texas King bed. Watch the orientation: two makers also sell it turned sideways, as 98 × 80 in, which is a very different bed in a room.

Wyoming King: 84 × 84 in (213 × 213 cm)

The Wyoming King is a 7 × 7 ft square, 12 in wider than a California King with the same length. It is the smallest square oversized bed and the easiest to fit in a normal master bedroom: our calculation gives a minimum room of 12 × 9.5 ft. It suits a couple plus one child or a large dog. More on the Wyoming King bed.

Alberta King: 96 × 96 in (244 × 244 cm)

The Alberta King is an 8 × 8 ft square, 12 in bigger than a Wyoming King each way. The same 96 × 96 in size is sold as Vermont King by some makers and as a smaller Alaskan King by another. If you shop by name you can miss it, so search by inches. More on the Alberta King bed.

Florida King: 108 × 80 in (274 × 203 cm)

The Florida King has the full 9 ft width of an Alaskan King but only the length of a standard King (80 in). It is the choice for families who need width in a room that is not deep enough for a 9 ft square. Two makers list it at 108 × 80 in; a third sells the same footprint as a shorter Alaskan King.

Alaskan King: 108 × 108 in (274 × 274 cm)

The Alaskan King bed is a 9 × 9 ft square and the biggest standard-named size: 81 sq ft, 92% more than a King. Four people get 27 in each across its width. It needs a room of at least 14 × 11.5 ft by our calculation. All its dimensions: Alaskan King bed size.

Family Bed: 120 × 80 in (305 × 203 cm)

The Family Bed is 10 ft wide and as long as a standard King. It is wider than the Alaskan King but much shorter (66.7 sq ft against 81), so it is really a co-sleeping bed, built for width. Of all the sizes on this page, it is the one whose dimensions vary most between sellers. More on the Family Bed.

Family Bed XL: 144 × 84 in (366 × 213 cm)

At 12 ft wide and 7 ft long, the Family Bed XL is the widest of the named oversized sizes, and at 84 sq ft it just beats the Alaskan King on area. It needs a wall of at least 17 ft for the headboard if you keep 30 in of walking space on each side.

For scale, the biggest bed in the world, a Guinness record set in 2011, is 86 ft 11 in long and 53 ft 11 in wide.

How many types of King beds are there?

Counting only the sizes we could find listed with exact inches by US makers, there are seven "King" beds, from the narrowest to the widest:

Type of King Width × length Widest?
California King 72 × 84 in narrowest King
King (Eastern King) 76 × 80 in —
Texas King 80 × 98 in —
Wyoming King 84 × 84 in —
Alberta King (Vermont King) 96 × 96 in —
Florida King 108 × 80 in widest King-named size, tied
Alaskan King 108 × 108 in widest King-named size, tied; biggest King

Wider than any King are the Family Bed (120 in) and the Family Bed XL (144 in). Other names turn up in searches, such as "Montana King" or "Australian King", but we found no US maker listing them with dimensions, so we don't give numbers for them.

Same bed, different names (and different numbers)

Unlike Queen and King, these sizes are made by a small number of specialists, and each names and measures them its own way. What we found on makers' own product pages:

  • 96 × 96 in is sold as Alberta King, Vermont King or as a smaller Alaskan King.
  • 108 × 80 in is sold as Florida King or as a shorter Alaskan King.
  • The Texas King is sold as 80 × 98 in and as 98 × 80 in.
  • One oversized-bed guide we read gives the Texas King as both 80 × 90 in and 80 × 98 in on the same page, and a Florida King of 108 × 108 in, the same as an Alaskan King.

The rule that follows: buy by inches, not by name, and use the same inches for the frame, the mattress and the sheets.

Which oversized bed size should you choose?

  • You are tall and sleep as a couple: Texas King (98 in long), or an Alaskan King if the room allows.
  • Couple plus one child or a big dog: Wyoming King, or Alberta King for more margin.
  • Two adults and two children: Alaskan King (27 in each for four) or Family Bed.
  • Width matters, the room is not deep: Florida King or Family Bed (both 80 in long).
  • The biggest possible surface: Family Bed XL (84 sq ft) or Alaskan King (81 sq ft).

Before you order, check the Alaskan King bed guide for delivery, sheets and frames: the same questions apply to every size on this page.

Delivery and sheets: the two practical questions

An oversized mattress is wider than any standard doorway, so it does not arrive flat: makers fold it in half or roll it into a box, and a frame comes as separate rails. Before you order, ask for the size of the largest box and measure your tightest stair turn (how it gets inside, for an Alaskan King).

Standard stores do not stock sheets for these sizes. A Split King takes two sets of Twin XL sheets; a Wyoming, Texas, Alaskan King or Family Bed mattress needs sheets cut for its exact size.
