Bedroom Size for a King Bed and Every Other Bed

The minimum bedroom size for king bed setups, by our calculation, is 11.3 × 9.2 ft: a 76 × 80 in (193 × 203 cm) mattress plus 30 in (76 cm) of walking space on both sides and at the foot. The table below gives the same minimum for every size from Twin to Alaskan King, and the calculator checks your own room.

  • 11.3 × 9.2 ftKing
  • 11 × 9.5 ftCalifornia King
  • 12 × 9.5 ftWyoming King

Will your bed fit? Room calculator

The calculator uses the mattress footprint only. A bed frame is usually a few inches wider and longer than its mattress, and a headboard adds depth: check the overall size on the product page and subtract it from your walking space.

Minimum bedroom size for each bed

Our rule: the mattress, plus 30 in (76 cm) of walking space on both sides and at the foot. The headboard sits against the wall. This is a comfortable minimum for walking around the bed, not a design standard; bedside tables, dressers and doors that open inward need more.

The code minimum for a bedroom

Building codes set a floor, not a comfort level. The International Residential Code (2021 edition) says that Habitable rooms shall have a floor area of not less than 70 square feet and must be not less than 7 feet (2134 mm) in any horizontal dimension (sections R304.1 and R304.2). Your state or city may adopt a different version, so check the local code.

What fits in a room of exactly that minimum, 7 × 10 ft, by our calculation: a Twin, a Twin XL or a Full, pushed against one wall with 30 in of walking space on the open side and at the foot. A Queen does not fit with that walking space, whichever wall it stands against.

How to measure your room

  1. Measure the wall where the headboard will go: that is the room width in the calculator.
  2. Measure from that wall to the opposite wall: that is the length.
  3. Take off anything that sticks out into the room: radiators, a closet door that opens inward, a window seat.
  4. For the oversized sizes, also measure your narrowest door and the turn of the staircase: a frame or mattress has to get into the room before it can fit there.

Beds by size

Every size explained: Queen vs King, California King, Alaskan King vs California King, Wyoming King, Alaskan King and the full bed size chart. For a child's room: twin bed dimensions. And the queen bed dimensions.

Oversized beds compared, with the room each one needs: Alaskan King vs. King, Alaskan King vs. California King and Texas vs. Wyoming vs. Alaskan King. The room an Alaskan King needs with 24, 30 or 36 in of walking space is in Alaskan King bed size.

Bedroom size: your questions answered

What is the minimum bedroom size for a king bed?
By our calculation, 11.3 × 9.2 ft: a 76 × 80 in King mattress plus 30 in of walking space on both sides and at the foot.
What size room do you need for a queen bed?
By the same rule, at least 10 × 9.2 ft for a 60 × 80 in Queen.
What size room do you need for a California King?
At least 11 × 9.5 ft: it needs a slightly narrower wall than a King but a slightly deeper room.
What size room does an Alaskan King need?
At least 14 × 11.5 ft by our calculation, for a 108 × 108 in mattress with 30 in of walking space on both sides and at the foot.
How much space should you leave around a bed?
We use 30 in (76 cm) on both sides and at the foot as a comfortable walking space. Leave more where drawers or doors open next to the bed.
What is the minimum size for a bedroom?
The International Residential Code (2021 edition) requires habitable rooms of at least 70 square feet, and at least 7 feet in any horizontal dimension (sections R304.1 and R304.2). Local codes can differ. In a 7 × 10 ft room, only a Twin, Twin XL or Full fits with walking space, pushed against one wall (our calculation).
Is a 12 by 12 ft bedroom considered small?
Not for most bed sizes: by our calculation, a 12 by 12 ft room fits a King (needs at least 11.3 by 9.2 ft), a California King (11 by 9.5 ft) and just a Wyoming King (12 by 9.5 ft); only the larger oversized sizes need more room.
Is a 10 by 12 ft bedroom considered small?
It depends on the bed: by our calculation, a 10 by 12 ft room fits a Twin, Twin XL, Full or Queen, all needing 10 ft of wall or less, but not a King, which needs at least 11.3 ft.
Is a 20 by 20 ft bedroom large?
Yes: by our calculation, a 20 by 20 ft room fits every US bed size up to the 108 by 108 in Alaskan King, which needs only 14 by 11.5 ft, leaving 6 ft or more of space on every side.
What size mattress fits a small bedroom?
At the International Residential Code minimum of 7 by 10 ft, a Twin, Twin XL or Full fits pushed against one wall with 30 in of walking space; a Queen does not fit that minimum on any wall, by our calculation.
