The Biggest Bed in the World, and the Biggest One You Can Buy

The biggest bed in the world, according to Guinness World Records, is 26.5 m long and 16.44 m wide (86 ft 11 in by 53 ft 11 in). It was built in Hertme, the Netherlands, on May 28, 2011, and holds the Guinness World Records title for the largest bed. No bed for sale comes close: the biggest we found is 12 × 12 ft, and the Alaskan King, the largest square size sold by several makers, is 9 × 9 ft.
Records and history checked on October 3, 2026 against Guinness World Records and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Bed sizes come from the makers' own product pages.
Key facts. The record bed covers 435.7 m² (4,689 sq ft), the floor area of 111 King beds. Guinness also lists a largest spring mattress, and by area that mattress is slightly bigger than the record bed. The Great Bed of Ware, famous since Shakespeare's day, is 3.26 m (10 ft 8 in) wide. A 12 × 12 ft bed you can order today covers more floor than its whole frame.
The largest bed in the world: the Guinness record
Guinness World Records lists the largest bed as 26.5 m (86 ft 11 in) long and 16.44 m (53 ft 11 in) wide. It was made by the committee of the St Gregorius summer festival in Hertme, the Netherlands, and the record was set during the festival, on May 28, 2011.
| Measure | Record bed |
|---|---|
| Length | 26.5 m · 86 ft 11 in |
| Width | 16.44 m · 53 ft 11 in |
| Surface | 435.7 m² · 4,689 sq ft |
| Same surface in King beds (76 × 80 in) | 111 |
| Same surface in Alaskan Kings (108 × 108 in) | about 58 |
| King beds that fit inside, side by side | 104 (13 along, 8 across) |

Length, width, date and place from Guinness World Records. Surface and King bed counts are our calculations.
That is all Guinness publishes about this bed. It gives no height, weight or materials, does not say how many people slept on it, and names no earlier record holder. Figures for all of these circulate online, but the record keeper doesn't confirm them, so we leave them out.
A bigger bed has been reported since. In February 2024, the charity ADRA Chile assembled a bed measured at 32.7 by 19.5 m (about 107 by 64 ft) in Chillán, Chile, according to the Adventist Review, the church news outlet that covered it. On October 3, 2026, the Guinness record page still listed the 2011 bed, so we count the Chilean bed as reported, not certified.
The largest mattress is bigger than the largest bed
Guinness keeps a separate record for the largest spring mattress: 22.04 m by 20 m (72.31 ft by 65.62 ft), made by a furniture company in Hangzhou, China, on May 6, 2017. It is 4.46 m shorter than the record bed but 3.56 m wider. By our calculation it covers 440.8 m² (4,745 sq ft), about 5 m² more than the record bed. The drawing at the top of this page shows both at the same scale.
So which one is the biggest? By title, the 2011 bed is the largest bed and the 2017 mattress is the largest spring mattress: Guinness treats them as two different records. By floor area alone, the mattress wins by about 1%.
The Great Bed of Ware, the giant bed of the 1590s
Long before Guinness, England had its own giant bed. The Great Bed of Ware was made between 1590 and 1600, probably as a curiosity to bring customers to one of the inns of Ware, in Hertfordshire. The town is 22 miles from London, then a day's journey on horseback. Guinness World Records lists it as the world's largest four-poster bed, and it belongs to the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London. Guinness quotes a V&A curator giving its weight: 641 kg (1,413 lb).
| Measure | Metric | Feet and inches |
|---|---|---|
| Height | 267 cm | 8 ft 9 in |
| Width | 326 cm | 10 ft 8 in |
| Depth | 338 cm | 11 ft 1 in |
| Floor area of the frame | 11.02 m² | about 119 sq ft |
Measurements from the V&A catalog entry; feet, inches and floor area are our conversions. They describe the whole piece of furniture, posts included. The museum does not give the size of the sleeping area.
The bed is carved oak, originally painted, with two marquetry panels in the headboard. The V&A notes that its height was slightly reduced in the 19th century, and that visitors carved their initials into it and pressed red wax seals onto it. Those marks are still visible on the bedposts and headboard.
It was famous almost at once. In Twelfth Night, first performed in 1601, Sir Toby Belch urges Sir Andrew to fill his written challenge with "as many lies as will lie in thy sheet of paper, although the sheet were big enough for the bed of Ware in England" (Act 3, Scene 2). Ben Jonson called it "the great bed at Ware" in a play in 1609. In 2012 and 2013 the bed went back to Ware on loan, and more than 34,000 visitors came to see it there.
How many people could it sleep? Guinness says it was advertised as having room for 12. Even counting the whole frame, that leaves under 10 sq ft per person, about half a Twin mattress each (our calculation).
The biggest bed you can buy
No bed on sale comes anywhere near the record, but a few are far bigger than a King. The largest we found listed as a regular size is 12 × 12 ft (144 × 144 in), built to order by one US maker: 144 sq ft, or 3.4 times the surface of a King. The widest is a different bed. Another maker lists a mattress 156 in (13 ft) wide, but it is only 108 in long, so it has less surface: 117 sq ft.
| Bed | Size | Surface | vs. a King | Who sells it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 × 12 ft, made to order | 144 × 144 in | 144 sq ft (13.38 m²) | 3.4× | One US maker |
| Widest for sale | 156 × 108 in | 117 sq ft (10.87 m²) | 2.8× | One US maker |
| Family Bed XL | 144 × 84 in | 84 sq ft (7.8 m²) | 2× | Several makers, including us |
| Alaskan King | 108 × 108 in | 81 sq ft (7.53 m²) | 1.9× | Several makers, including us |
| King | 76 × 80 in | 42.2 sq ft (3.92 m²) | 1× | Standard size |
Sizes as listed on the makers' product pages: the two custom beds checked on October 3, 2026, the named sizes on September 22, 2026. Surfaces and ratios are our calculations.
Two cautions. Some custom workshops say they will build a bed in any size and publish no upper limit, so a bigger bed may exist somewhere; we list only sizes that a maker actually publishes. And above the California King, the same name can mean different inches from one maker to the next, so check the measurements on every listing rather than the name.
We sell the two biggest sizes that several makers list. The Alaskan King firm foam mattress costs $4,389, and our Family Bed mattresses come in 10 ft and 12 ft widths, from $4,659. We don't sell anything bigger than the Family Bed XL. Prices for each oversized size, ours and other makers', are on the Alaskan King bed price page.
Is the Alaskan King bed real?
Yes. The Alaskan King is a real size, 108 × 108 in (9 × 9 ft). The four makers whose listings we checked all give those exact measurements, and mattresses, frames and sheets are made in it. It is 28 in wider and 10 in longer than a Texas King, with 92% more surface than a King. Every measurement is in our Alaskan King bed size guide.
Is an Alaskan King or a Texas King bigger?
The Alaskan King, in both directions. It measures 108 × 108 in (274 × 274 cm) against 80 × 98 in (203 × 249 cm) for the Texas King, which gives it 81 sq ft of surface against 54.4. The Texas King is the long one, built for tall sleepers, but at 80 in it is narrower than even a Wyoming King. Full comparison: Texas King vs. Wyoming King vs. Alaskan King.
What is a 7 ft bed called?
In US sizes, a bed 7 ft wide and 7 ft long is a Wyoming King: 84 × 84 in (213 × 213 cm). The California King is also 7 ft long, but only 6 ft wide (72 × 84 in), and the Family Bed XL is 7 ft long and 12 ft wide.
Other Guinness bed records
| Record | Figure | Year and place |
|---|---|---|
| Largest four-poster bed | The Great Bed of Ware, about 3 m wide | About 1590 · Ware, England |
| Largest waterbed | 46.77 m² (503.4 sq ft), holding 7,000 liters (1,849.2 US gallons) of water | 2001 · Hamburg, Germany |
| Most people on a single bed | 54 people | 2013 · Beijing, China |
| Tallest stack of mattresses | 8.80 m (28 ft 10 in) | 2025 · Surat, India |
Guinness gives the waterbed's area and volume, not its length and width. It has no record for the largest hotel bed or the tallest bunk bed: neither title appeared when we went through its full list of record pages in September 2026.
How much room the biggest beds need
With 30 in of walking space on each side and at the foot, the minimum room for each size is (headboard wall × depth):
| Bed | Size | Minimum room |
|---|---|---|
| King | 76 × 80 in | 11.3 × 9.2 ft |
| Alaskan King | 108 × 108 in | 14 × 11.5 ft |
| Family Bed XL | 144 × 84 in | 17 × 9.5 ft |
| Widest for sale | 156 × 108 in | 18 × 11.5 ft |
| 12 × 12 ft, made to order | 144 × 144 in | 17 × 14.5 ft |
Getting the bed into the room matters as much. The 12 × 12 ft bed ships in pieces, and our Alaskan King firm foam mattress travels folded in half so it clears a standard doorway. To test your own room, use the bedroom size calculator.
How we checked these figures
We read every record and historical figure on this page at its source on October 3, 2026: the Guinness World Records pages for the largest bed and each other record, the V&A catalog entry for the Great Bed of Ware, and the text of Twelfth Night. Bed sizes come from the makers' own product pages. Surfaces, conversions and comparisons are our calculations, with 1 in = 2.54 cm and a King at 76 × 80 in. Where a source says nothing, we say so instead of filling the gap.
Every size bigger than a King, drawn to the same scale, is on our chart of the biggest bed sizes.
